Jeep YJ Decals: 4 Ways to Refresh Your 1987 to 1995 Wrangler

The Jeep Wrangler YJ, the square-headlight Wrangler sold for the 1987 to 1995 model years, is the easiest Jeep of all to refresh with vinyl. Its hood, fenders, and flat windshield are big, nearly flat surfaces, and many factory looks from that era (Islander, Sahara, Renegade, Rio Grande) leaned on factory decals. If your YJ's original decals have faded to ghosts, or it never had any, four proven ways can bring it back: custom hood lettering from $29.99, retro trim-style side hood graphics, fender accent decals from $11.99, and small-detail decals like windshield easter eggs. All four install in an afternoon with a squeegee and patience, and all four come off later without hurting 30-year-old paint if you prep correctly.

Why is the YJ perfect for decals?

The YJ was the very first Wrangler, replacing the CJ-7 for the 1987 model year, and it is the only Wrangler generation ever built with rectangular headlights. That squared-off front end dates the Jeep instantly, in the best way. It also means your canvas is unusually friendly: the hood is long and flat, the windshield is a flat pane that folds forward, and the steel fenders have none of the curves and vents that complicate decal placement on a JL.

Jeep leaned on that canvas hard in period. Through the YJ years, the catalog ran heavy on graphics-driven trims, including the beach-themed Islander, the Sahara, the body-kitted Renegade, and the 1995 Rio Grande (Jeep Wrangler YJ history). Graphics were a big part of what set those trims apart, which is exactly why a faded YJ responds so dramatically to new decals. You are not modifying the Jeep. You are finishing it the way the factory did.

The 2026 Wrangler Rewind proved how much demand there is for this look: Jeep built an entire modern special edition around 80s-style graphics. We broke down that package in our Rewind-inspired retro decal guide. On a real YJ, you do not need to imitate the era. Your Jeep is the era.

Way 1: How do I put hood lettering on a YJ?

Hood-side lettering is a classic way to name a YJ. The lettering runs along the side of the hood, above the fender line, reading level when the hood is closed. A YJ has no fender vents to dodge, but our lettering listing names the JL, JK, TJ, and JT hoods, so measure your YJ hood side before you order.

You have two directions. Spell out a word of your choice, or go personal and put your Jeep's name on the hood, which is a long YJ tradition. Our custom text set is die-cut to your exact word in your choice of fonts and 63 colors, cut for Wrangler hood sides.

Way 2: What retro graphics fit the YJ era?

If you want the full period look rather than a single word, go for a side hood graphic set. The reference point here is the Islander, the beach-themed YJ trim Jeep sold from 1988 to 1993 with sunset graphics on the hood and lower body. It is one of the most loved YJ looks, and surviving originals are almost always cracked and faded.

Our Tiki Islander set is a modern take on that style: a left-and-right pair, each 26 inches wide by 4.25 inches tall, in your choice of 63 vinyl colors, with your own coordinates worked into the design. On a white, red, or teal YJ, it suits the era.

Way 3: What decals work on YJ fenders?

YJ front fenders are flat-topped steel with a vertical face, which makes them the easiest fender of any Wrangler generation to decal. A matched left and right accent pair is the usual play: it frames the front end without competing with hood graphics.

Flags are a popular choice. A tattered American flag pair in matte black on a dark YJ is subtle until the light hits it; in white on a red or teal YJ it pops like a factory option. At $11.99, it is also the cheapest meaningful upgrade on this list, and a smart first project if you have never installed vinyl before.

Way 4: What about the small details?

Modern Wranglers hide little easter eggs all over the body, a tradition your YJ predates. You can retrofit the fun. A set of small Willys silhouette decals on the wheels gives aftermarket rims the factory easter egg look, and the small die-cut pieces take just minutes to place. One on the corner of that big flat windshield, one on the fuel door, one on the tub: suddenly your 90s Jeep has 2020s personality.

Which option should you choose?

Option Placement Price Install difficulty Best for
Custom hood lettering Hood sides From $29.99 Easy Factory trim look or naming your Jeep
Retro side hood graphics Hood sides $69.99 Moderate The full Islander-era statement
Fender accent pair Front fenders From $11.99 Easy First-time installers, subtle builds
Easter egg details Wheels, glass, tub $12.99 Very easy Finishing touches on any build

If you only do one thing, do the hood lettering. It gives the side of the hood a factory-style name for about thirty dollars. If your YJ is a weekend toy and you want people grinning at gas stations, the Islander-style set is the move.

Will decals stick to 30-year-old paint?

Yes, if the paint is sound and clean. Vinyl bonds to the clear coat (or single-stage paint) surface, so what matters is not age but condition. Follow three rules on a YJ:

  • Wash, then degrease. Decades of wax and silicone dressings are the number one cause of lifting edges. Wipe the area with isopropyl alcohol after washing and let it flash dry.
  • Skip heavily oxidized or flaking areas. If paint is chalky white and rubs off on a towel, vinyl will pull it when removed. Polish the spot first or choose a different panel.
  • Install between 60 and 80 degrees F. Cold vinyl cracks and hot vinyl overstretches. A garage install is worth the wait.

Die-cut lettering and fender pairs go on dry. For the longer Islander-style panels, a wet application gives you repositioning time; our wet vs. dry installation guide walks through both methods step by step. And if you are clearing off the crusty originals first, see how to remove old decals and residue without damaging paint.

Frequently asked questions

What years is the Jeep Wrangler YJ?

The YJ is the first-generation Jeep Wrangler, sold for the 1987 through 1995 model years as the replacement for the CJ-7. It is the only Wrangler generation with rectangular headlights.

Did the YJ come with factory graphics?

Many did. Trims like the Islander, Sahara, Renegade, and Rio Grande used decal and graphics packages as a core part of their identity, so adding vinyl to a YJ today is period-correct rather than a modification.

Will new decals damage my YJ's original paint?

Quality vinyl will not harm sound paint, and it shields the covered area from UV and light abrasion. The risk is only on failing paint: if a panel is flaking or heavily oxidized, removal can lift paint with the decal, so test a small hidden spot first.

What size lettering fits a YJ hood?

Our hood-side lettering is listed for later Wrangler and Gladiator hoods, so check it against your YJ. Measure the flat area between the hood seam and the fender line before ordering, and size custom text to fit within it.

Can I put a decal on the YJ windshield?

Yes. The YJ windshield is a flat pane of glass, which makes banner and corner decals easier to install than on modern curved windshields. Keep decals out of your line of sight and check your state's windshield rules before placing one.
