Jeep dropped the eleventh of its twelve limited-edition Wranglers on September 12, 2026. It is the 2027 Jeep Wrangler JL-2A, a tribute to the 1945 Willys CJ-2A, the first Jeep built for civilian life. Jump straight to the reveal.
Before the reveal, Jeep posted a redacted sentence on the Drop Zone page and invited everyone to guess. We ran the analysis below rather than guessing on vibes. We got the hard constraint right and the conclusion wrong, and both halves of that are worth keeping on the page.
The reveal: 2027 Jeep Wrangler JL-2A
Jeep built Drop 11 on the Wrangler Rubicon platform and pointed every detail at the CJ-2A, which Willys-Overland introduced in July 1945 in Toledo, Ohio as the first Jeep designed for civilian buyers rather than the Army.
Jeep's official reveal video for the Wrangler JL-2A. Video: Jeep.

| Interior | Nappa Heritage Tan leather, Bison Brown door panels and console, Desert Orange stitching |
| Heritage details | Willys-Overland satin chrome shifter medallion, HVAC vents with seven-slot grille and Willys silhouette graphics, rear swing gate plaque recreating the CJ-2A data plate |
| Also standard | Front TrailCam with integrated washer, and a Convenience Group with remote start, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a universal garage door opener |
| Price | $4,995 package, which Jeep puts at $115 more than a similarly equipped Rubicon |
| Orders | Open October 2026 |
The swing gate plaque is the detail worth walking over to see. The original CJ-2A carried a dashboard data plate illustrated with farm and factory scenes, because Willys was selling the Jeep as a work machine to people who had just watched it win a war. Jeep recreated that artwork and hung it on the tailgate.
Jeep Brand CEO Branden Coté put it this way: "The original CJ-2A represents a defining chapter in Jeep brand history... the 2027 Wrangler JL-2A brings that story full circle."
Worth flagging on price, because it is being reported wrong in places: the package is $4,995, not $6,995. Jeep's own release states the figure and the $115 delta against a comparable Rubicon.
Gobi is back
The color news buried in this drop is that Gobi returns for 2027, on the two-door JL-2A. Jeep last put Gobi on the Wrangler and Gladiator earlier this decade, and it has been off the charts long enough that owners have been asking for it back.
It is not a random revival either. Gobi stands in for Harvest Tan, one of the colors Willys sold the CJ-2A in, which is the kind of detail that separates a tribute from a sticker package. The four-door instead gets '41, the green Jeep introduced on the Sarge earlier in this same campaign.
The accents follow the same logic. Jeep painted the wheels Joose as a nod to the Sunset Red wheels the CJ-2A wore, then added orange tow hooks front and rear to carry that color onto the body, set against body-color fender flares and a matching three-piece hardtop.
What the CJ-2A actually was
Jeep is reaching further back with this one than with any other drop in the run, so the original is worth knowing.
Willys-Overland introduced the CJ-2A in July 1945, before the war in the Pacific had even ended. CJ stood for Civilian Jeep. The company had spent four years building the MB for the Army and now had to find somebody else to sell to, and the pitch was not adventure. It was work. Willys marketed it as the Universal Jeep and aimed it at farmers and ranchers, with a rear power takeoff that let it drive belt-driven equipment. That is the farm and factory artwork now sitting on the JL-2A's tailgate.
What changed from the military MB:
- A tailgate, which the MB did not have, with the spare tire moved to the side to make room
- Bigger headlights, mounted flush in the grille rather than recessed behind it
- Seven grille slots instead of nine, the change that gave Jeep the grille it still uses today
- A stronger T-90 three-speed transmission, behind the same L-134 Go Devil four-cylinder
- Civilian equipment as options: a passenger seat, a rear seat, a canvas top, a rearview mirror, front and rear PTO, and a belt pulley
Willys built 214,760 of them through 1949, which made the CJ-2A the first mass-produced four-wheel-drive vehicle sold to the public anywhere. Every Wrangler since traces back to it, which is the claim the JL-2A badge is making.
One caution, in the spirit of the GP note further down this page. You will often read that the slot count dropped from nine to seven because Ford owned the rights to the nine-slot stamping. It is repeated everywhere and it is not firmly documented. The seven-slot change is a fact; the reason behind it is a story.
The other thing Rubicon did this year
The JL-2A is a Rubicon underneath, and Rubicon had its own milestone in 2026. On April 29, 2026, Jeep announced that the Rubicon nameplate had passed one million units sold worldwide, counting Wrangler and Gladiator together.
The Rubicon arrived on the Wrangler in 2003 with Tru-Lok locking differentials front and rear, a Rock-Trac transfer case with a 4:1 low range, and heavy underbody protection, as standard equipment on a vehicle you could buy off a dealer lot. Nobody else was doing that at the time. Roughly 23 years later it is the base that Jeep chose for its tribute to the vehicle that started the whole civilian line, which is a tidy piece of symmetry for an 85th anniversary campaign.
Where our call landed
We predicted EAGLE. That was wrong.
The constraint we built it on was right, and it is the part that still matters. Jeep's page data labeled the September card with a single unbroken run of five redacted characters, and we said the name was five characters with no space. It was: JL-2A. What we got wrong was assuming five characters meant a five-letter word. Jeep used a model code, so every name-shaped candidate on our shortlist was doomed from the start.
The clue sentence pointed the right way the whole time. "The [3] that left [3] for [3]" reads cleanly as the Jeep that left war for work, which is the CJ-2A story exactly. We read the theme correctly and then went looking for a word to match it.
The clue, exactly as Jeep published it
Jeep redacts each letter individually, so the block characters are a letter count. Here it is verbatim:
A modern ███ to the ████, the ███ that left ███ for ███, and turned ██ into ████, and ███ into ████. The 2027 Jeep® Wrangler █████, born from our ████, built for ████.
Broken into slots, that reads:
- A modern [3] to the [4]
- the [3] that left [3] for [3]
- and turned [2] into [4]
- and [3] into [4]
- The 2027 Jeep Wrangler [5]
- born from our [4], built for [4]
We knew the counts were accurate, not decorative, for two reasons. First, the same sentence uses runs of two, three, four, and five, so Jeep was not padding to a fixed width. Second, an earlier clue in this same campaign contained "Inspired by ███ ██████," which resolved to "the Willys." Three and six. It matched.
The five-character constraint
This was the part almost nobody picked up, because it was not in the visible text. It was in the page's underlying data, in the label attached to the September card:
"labelText":"09.12.26 | Jeep® Wrangler █████"
One unbroken run of five. Not six and five with a space between them. That single detail ruled out every two-word candidate being floated, and it held: JL-2A is five characters, hyphen included.
What the ducks told you, and what they did not
Jeep paired every drop with a collectible rubber duck, a nod to the Jeep ducking tradition, and says outright that each duck carries clues.
Look at what actually carried the clue on the ducks already revealed:
- Sarge: a World War Two circle star on its side
- Laredo: a cowboy hat with a sheriff star on the band
- Rockslide: a terrain map printed across the body
- 85th Anniversary: the number 85 printed on the flank
- Whitecap: a white ribbed beanie
Every single tell is a marking or an accessory. Never the body color. That last one is the proof: the Whitecap duck has an orange body, and Whitecap is a snow and mountain peak theme. The clue was the hat.
The Duck 11 render was a plain orange body with a gold bill, a gold head tuft, no hat, no emblem, and no text on either flank. Jeep also stripped the descriptive alt text that gave earlier ducks away in plain English.
So the September duck carried no usable clue at all, and that read held up. The orange body turned out to echo Gobi and Joose, but you could not have known that in advance, because Whitecap had already used an orange duck for a snow theme.
Are all twelve revivals of old Jeep names? We checked
This assumption did the most damage to other people's predictions, and it is wrong. It is closer to half and half.
| Drop | Name | Revival or new |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | MOAB 392 | Revival |
| 2 | Whitecap | New |
| 3 | 85th Anniversary | New |
| 4 | Willys 392 | Revival |
| 5 | Rockslide | New |
| 6 | Rewind | New |
| 7 | America250 | New |
| 8 | Sarge | Revived paint color |
| 9 | Laredo | Revival |
| 10 | Smoky Mountain | Revival |
| 11 | JL-2A | Heritage tribute, new badge |
Whitecap, Rockslide, and Rewind are new names created for this campaign. America250 marks the country's 250th year. The 85th Anniversary edition is an anniversary by definition. And Sarge is a revived paint color, Sarge Green, paint code PGG, first offered on the 2016 Wrangler Willys, rather than a revived trim.
JL-2A splits the difference again. The badge is new, but it is built entirely out of a 1945 model designation, which is why the heritage read was right even though the name guess was not.
Genuine revivals have real predecessors. Moab goes back to the 2013 Wrangler Moab Edition, a Sahara-based special with black Rubicon wheels, steel bumpers, and Moab hood decals, and the first non-Rubicon Wrangler offered with a locking rear differential.
The pattern we flagged held. The last four drops are all heritage callbacks, and they are also the only ones carrying 2027 model years. Laredo revived a 1980 CJ-5 and CJ-7 appearance package. Smoky Mountain revived a 2017 Wrangler edition. Sarge pulled a color out of the back catalog. JL-2A reaches furthest back of all of them, to 1945.
What we predicted, and why
Combining the two constraints that survived scrutiny, one word at five letters and a likely heritage callback, this was our shortlist before the reveal:
| Candidate | The case for | The problem |
|---|---|---|
| POLAR | Exact five-letter historical name, used on a 2013 Wrangler edition, and a Jeep trademark filing for Polar surfaced recently | The clue is about work and origins, not cold |
| CHIEF | Exact five-letter historical name, used on a 2017 Wrangler edition | Cherokee adjacent naming that Jeep has been moving away from |
| EAGLE | Evokes the CJ-7 Golden Eagle, gold hood decal and gold wheels, one of the most collectible CJs | The historical name is Golden Eagle, so Eagle alone breaks the exact revival pattern |
Our read on the sentence was that the most revealing slot is "turned [2] into [4]." A two-letter word becoming a four-letter word, inside a Jeep heritage sentence, points hard at the brand's own origin story. The obvious fit is the letters GP becoming Jeep.
A quick caution on that, because it gets repeated as fact constantly: the popular claim that GP stands for "General Purpose" is folklore, not documented history. Ford's GP designation is generally understood to break down differently, with G indicating a government contract and P indicating a particular reconnaissance car wheelbase. The name Jeep almost certainly has messier origins than the tidy version.
Read the three transformations together and they were all saying one thing. Something left war for civilian life. That is the story of the first Jeep sold to the public, and Jeep built the whole edition on it.
Get the look without the limited run
Orders open in October, the package is $4,995 on top of a Rubicon, and limited runs sell at dealer markup. The part you actually notice from ten feet away is the hood. Ours costs rather less.
More options in our hood graphics and decals collection. If you want the wider context on how these trims relate to each other across generations, our Wrangler generations guide lays out the CJ to JL lineage, and the full Twelve 4 Twelve roundup covers every drop so far.
One drop left
Drop 12 lands October 12, 2026 and closes the campaign. We ran this exercise for the tenth drop and got it right ahead of the reveal, which you can read in our 2027 Wrangler Smoky Mountain breakdown. Drop 11 we called wrong. We will run it again for the finale, and we will show our work the same way.
Frequently asked questions
What is the 2027 Jeep Wrangler JL-2A?
It is the eleventh Twelve 4 Twelve limited edition, revealed September 12, 2026. Built on the Wrangler Rubicon, it honors the 1945 Willys CJ-2A with exclusive 17-inch retro wheels in Joose finish, 33-inch BFGoodrich KO2 tires, Nappa Heritage Tan leather with Desert Orange stitching, a Willys-Overland shifter medallion, and a rear swing gate plaque recreating the CJ-2A data plate.
How much does the Jeep Wrangler JL-2A cost?
The JL-2A package is $4,995, which Jeep states is $115 more than a similarly equipped Rubicon. Order books open in October 2026. Some outlets have reported $6,995, which does not match Jeep's own release.
Is Gobi coming back for 2027?
Yes. Gobi returns as the two-door color on the JL-2A, standing in for Harvest Tan, one of the shades Willys offered on the original CJ-2A. The four-door gets '41 instead, the green introduced on the Sarge edition.
What was the Willys CJ-2A?
The first Jeep built for civilian buyers, introduced by Willys-Overland in July 1945 in Toledo, Ohio and sold as the Universal Jeep. It added a tailgate, a side-mounted spare, larger flush-mounted headlights, a seven-slot grille in place of the military nine, and a rear power takeoff so it could run farm equipment. Willys built 214,760 through 1949.
How many Rubicons has Jeep sold?
Jeep announced on April 29, 2026 that the Rubicon nameplate had passed one million units sold worldwide, counting Wrangler and Gladiator together. Rubicon arrived on the Wrangler in 2003 with factory locking differentials, a 4:1 transfer case and underbody protection as standard.
How many letters was the Drop 11 name?
Five characters, and Jeep's page data was accurate. The September card was labeled "09.12.26 | Jeep Wrangler" followed by a single unbroken run of five redacted characters. The answer was JL-2A, five characters including the hyphen, which is why every five-letter word candidate missed.
How many Twelve 4 Twelve drops are left?
One. Drop 12 arrives October 12, 2026 and closes the campaign.
