The difference between a trip that feels planted on a washboard road and one that wallows and bottoms out usually comes down to how the gear is packed, not how much of it there is. Here is how to load an overland vehicle for the long haul: keep weight low and centered, respect payload, and keep the gear you actually reach for within arm's length.
Overlanding rewards self-reliance, and that means carrying water, fuel, food, tools, and recovery gear for days at a time. The trap is treating your Jeep or truck like an infinite closet. Every pound changes how the vehicle handles, brakes, and climbs. Load it thoughtfully, and the rig stays composed. Load it carelessly, and you get body roll, sagging suspension, uneven tire wear, and a nervous feeling every time the road tips sideways.
Start with the number that matters: payload and GVWR
Before you buy a single storage box, find out how much weight your vehicle can legally and safely carry. Payload is the figure that matters, and it is simple math: your Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) minus the vehicle's curb weight. The GVWR is set by the manufacturer and printed on the sticker on your driver's-side door pillar, as well as in the owner's manual. Keep the weight low and centered
Once you know your budget in pounds, the next rule is about placement. Put the heaviest items as low as possible and as close to the center of the vehicle as you can, ideally on the cargo floor and between the axles. Storing heavy equipment low and centered keeps the vehicle's center of gravity where it belongs, which improves traction and reduces body roll when the trail leans the rig from side to side.
Think of it in layers. Water, tools, a fridge, and recovery gear form the dense bottom layer against the floor. Clothing, sleeping bags, and other light, bulky items ride on top. Drawer and platform systems: build a base layer
A drawer or sleeping-platform system is the upgrade most overlanders reach for once totes stop cutting it. Pull-out drawers let you reach anything in the load without unpacking the whole rig, keep gear from becoming projectiles, and create a flat top surface you can sleep on or stack lighter gear across. Because they hold your heavy items down at floor level, they also help keep weight low where you want it.
There is a trade-off to plan for. As DrivingLine notes, many manufactured drawer systems weigh in around 150 to 200 pounds empty, and that weight, on top of everything else, can contribute to suspension sag or bottoming out on the trail. Keep recovery gear and the spare within reach

Keep it in secured containers on the floor rather than up high or loose in the back. Food stores best in a system: a fridge or cooler for perishables anchored low, and stackable bins for dry goods so a day's food is easy to pull without excavating the whole rig.
